Finding Your Calling

Finding your Calling is a lot like finding a needle in a haystack . . . you know there is a needle in there somewhere, you just are having a very hard time finding it!

Just like the needle our Calling or our Life's Purpose can be very hard to find . . . "Where do I begin to look?" "How will I know what it is when I discover it?" "Is it really there?" And possibly the most important question of all . . . "Why should I even bother?"

Well, the great thing about Life is we can choose to search for our Vocation or not, its all up to us. But why should we even bother, what is so important that it can't wait?

Let's examine each of these questions:

Why should we even bother, what is so important that it can't wait?

Indeed, if your like a lot of people the things that you tend to worry about most are things like: "does this person like me?" or "what does my boss want me to do, now?" or "are we going to get this house?"

Clearly, if your like most people, then the furthest thing on your mind is trying to figure out your "Calling". After all, there are just too many things to think about during a regular day, as it is.

Or should we be spending the time to think about it?

The thought process here is: by taking the time to uncover our single reason for coming back, we reveal what we actually like to do the majority of the time.

The incredible thing is that if you sit down and think about what you like to do and what you don't like to do, you soon discover that when you are working on what you enjoy most, Life seems to work out for the better.

The other thing is, more importantly, when you are doing your Life's Purpose you are: Moving closer to Home; also you are actually having a big impact on not only the people around you, but society as a whole.

We don't have to be famous to make a big impression on many people.

Consider this:

Imagine that you are at a crosswalk and a senior citizen is standing next to you. Both of you are waiting for the light to turn so the two of you can walk across the street. As the light turns, you start walking over to the other side of the road, about half way you turn around only to find that she (the senior citizen) is walking much slower. She has only just begun, because she struggles to walk.

The light is flashing now. But instead of walking across the street to your destination, you go back and help this woman.

She is so thankful, that she starts telling you her life's story. She does this because she wants you to know that there was once upon-a-time when she was as fit as you are now. There are also, not enough people in her life that do something for her like that. So, instead of walking away, once again, you take the time to listen.

When she's done, just a few minutes have gone by, you smile and say that she's most welcome for the help. You part ways and go about your day.

During all of this three other people have seen this entire event happen. Each one of them feels so good about you and what you did for that lady, that each of them finds ways to do something worthy for someone else too.

In each case, three other people do good deeds for someone else and so on.

You can probably tell that it wouldn't take too long to have thousands of people all inspired to do something good for someone else.

All because of what you did to help that lady cross the road.

Now what are you thinking?

This is the reason why we should search for our Life's Purpose. Because it is this kind of impact that we make when we are doing what we were born to do.

But is it really there?

The first thing you may or may not come to realize is that everyone has one.

However, it can be very difficult, if not seemingly impossible, to see if you have a "Calling". After all if your love is fishing and you happen to be very good at it; doesn't that constitute a "Calling"?

It might . . .

The fact is we don't come into this world without having something to do. Your "Calling" is not just something that you may be good at, it is also a Life Challenge. Since you should be working on it for the better part of your life you will also find that it isn't easy.

But then, nothing worth while is . . .

Ponder this for a moment.

If it is a "fact" that we come here with something to do what is meant by the term "fact"?

In this context you could view your life as a "job". In this "job" we start out brand new, we don't know what we're supposed to do, so we tend to be very needy.

As we grow, we learn. From speaking to walking, to going to school and college, all the way up to finding our first place to live and a job.

Now if your "boss" were watching your progress, it would be safe to say that they are pleased with your momentum.

But they also want to see you really grow and shine as a human. They hope that you will discover the very reason why you are here.

They also know that when you do, you will have a choice to do it, or not. But if you do, you will grow in ways that you never thought possible.

So, in order to help you, they will devise ways of guiding you to your path. You may never know that they are assisting you. They kind of work in the background.

But who are "they"?

Have you ever noticed when you meet someone just as you were thinking about him or her? Or when you are reading the newspaper and you "happen" to find the perfect house?

This is the Law of Attraction. This Law states that whatever you put your thoughts and feelings to, you will attract that to you. This is "they".

Suffice to say it is because of this Law that you experience what you do. It is a kind of co-creating that go between you and the Universe.

Having said all that "how will you know what it is when you discover it?"

There are a few clues as to how you find out what your "Calling" is. The first is that you find something that you really like and you're "naturally" good at. There is a lot to be said for working at something that you enjoy doing.

This may mean that what you are here to do has nothing to do with earning a living. Remember the second thing to bear in mind is that it also is a "Life Challenge".

A "Life Challenge" does not mean that you are going to have a really hard time at doing your Life's Purpose. It simply means that as you proceed you will get better at it. This also means that as you advance because you are getting better, you will be faced with more and more difficult challenges. It needs to be said that you will always be able to handle what is thrown at you.

The third thing to point out is that you will meet people or situations that draw you back to your Life's Purpose.

If you then sit back and think about all of that, you may begin to realize what you were meant to do. Couple that with the fact that it will always have a positive impact on the people you come in contact with, it doesn't take long to come to this next question:

"Where do I begin to look?"

The rule of thumb is always start with looking inside of you. Since all of your answers (and questions) come from here it is safe to say that it makes sense to begin here.

But this is easier to say than actually do.

If you can heed close attention to what you naturally do, then this should point you into the direction you need to be looking.

Okay, so you've asked yourself all of the questions you can and you've answered them too but you are still wondering where to look.

Well, the next thing to do is notice what you naturally do the most. For example:

Do you spend your time around children? Or do children naturally feel comfortable around you? If this is the case, then maybe you should think about having a family or finding work that allows you to be around children.

What if you were good with people? Do you like helping them? Or do you feel an urge to serve in some way? Well, if this is how you feel, then maybe you should look at something that brings all of those elements together.

You could be mechanically inclined. If this is the case then what area of technology do you love most? Once you know the answer . . . well you know the rest.

The important thing to remember about your "Calling" is to keep in mind that you do have one, even if you can't see it right now. It should also be said that when you come here, you would always have a Life Challenge. If you didn't it would be like hiring you for a job that doesn't exist. (There aren't too many employers that would do that.) This is how you know it is there.

Discovering it takes time. You may find that it takes you a lifetime to perceive it. The important thing to remember is to keep asking questions that help you to explore your inner self. Growth happens every time you do this. Once you do find your Life's Purpose then Life naturally flows better. (This does not mean you will never have another challenge. It just means that Life is more fulfilling.)

Of course you always begin looking inside yourself. This is the easiest thing to do. It also means that it makes it a very personal journey.

You should remember that this is your expedition. You have the answers within you. Having said that, you have help Life will always find a way to reflect back to you what you need to be working on and which direction you need to be looking in.

It's up to you to pay attention.
